Selection of wood for construction of new building

Vastu Shastra clearly prescribes what materials can be used and what should not be used in constructing buildings. As a general rule, materials taken out from dilapidated buildings or those destroyed by fire or floods must not be used for constructing a new house or building. Similarly materials stolen and brought for sale or those auctioned by courts should not be used. The old material taken out from one's old building can, however, be used for renovation of that building.
Trees felled from the premises of places of worship, graveyard, and cemetery etc. should be strictly avoided as they will bring nothing but suffering and grief to the users.

Selection of wood:

It is recommended to use only one type of wood for a building. Use of wood from two or three types of trees will give only medium or low results. A building constructed out of one material is said to be "pure", while, with two materials, it is called "mixed" and with three, "mingled".

Use of wood from following trees are considered to give beneficial results as follows:-

Mango Tree - Blessings of Gods and angels. Teak Tree - Big position and influence. Margosa or Neem Tree - Good education, knowledge and skill in various arts and crafts.
Woodwork made from Kaypal, Kutki, teak, Ashok and Kadamb trees will bring happiness and prosperity.

Trees like Tamarind, Palm, Banyan, Peepul etc. are not recommended as they are believed to make the residents poor and suffer from many difficulties.


Shape of plots

Triangular, Pentagonal, Polygonal and Odd Shaped plots are not recommended.
login having a square shape is the best. Ideal if there are roads on all sides.

Rectangular Shape
In case of rectangular shaped login, the ratio of width to length should not be more than 1 or 2. It is better to have east and west dimension more than that of north and south.A plot with length too large compared to the width is not preferred. Square ShapeBig and square shaped login where sufficient open spaces can be left all around the building is the best proposition one can look forward to.

Circular Shape
Circular plots are not recommended Pentagonal Shape Sites with five corners and those with very odd shapes are not good and should be avoided. It is believed to cause all kinds of problems and poverty.

Triangular Shape
Triangular plots are not good as it is believed to affect progress and invites problems from government and authorities.
Lion Faced Plots Lion faced plots, which are wider in front and narrow at the back are acceptable for commercial buildings but not for residential ones.

Cow Faced Plots
Cow Faced plots that are narrow at the front but wider at the back is considered auspicious for residential purposes, especially if there are roads on the south or western sides of the plot. Cow faced plots are not recommended for commercial buildings.



Extension and addition to plots

It is good to expand on an existing login towards its northern side. However it should cover the entire north or north-east portion and not just the north-west only.

Effect of roads around a house plot

The position of roads relative to the login is considered important in Vastu Shastra.

Road on one side

A login with road to the eastern side is called 'east block'. This is a very good position.
A login with the road to the western side is called the 'west block'. This position is acceptable.
A login with the road to the northern side is called the 'north block'. This is very good position.
A login with the road to the southern side is called the 'south block'. This position is not preferred but can be utilized with careful planning and adhering to all the other principles of Vastu Shastra.

Roads on two sides.

login with roads to the northern and eastern side is called the 'north east block'. This layout is very good.
login with roads to the southern and eastern side is called 'south east block'. This layout is good.
login with roads to the southern and western side is called 'south west block'. This layout is least preferred.
login with northern and western side is called 'north west block'. This layout is acceptable.

Roads on three sides.

Sites with roads on three sides are better than those with roads on two sides.
login with roads to northern, eastern and western is very good.
login with roads to northern, eastern and southern sides is good.
login with roads to northern, western and southern sides is acceptable
login with roads to eastern, southern, and western sides is least preferred.

Roads on four sides.

A login with roads on all the four sides is considered the best.

Location of Staircase

Southern or south-western portions of the building are ideal for locating staircase.
Do not design staircase of a building in the north-east portion.
The steps should climb from east to west or from north to south.
If there are landings or turnings in a staircase, it should wind up in the clockwise direction.
The number of steps in a staircase should be an odd number so that if you start climbing the steps with the right foot, you will reach the higher floor on the right foot itself.

Location of Prayer Room

Room for prayer and meditation is recommended to be in the north-east corner of the house.
Deity or image of god should not face the south direction. Ideal positions are such that you face east or west while praying.


Vastu Tips for Kitchen

According to the Vastu Shilpa Shastra, kitchen can be in the North -West or South-East corner of a house.
Drinking water taps or kitchen sinks should be fixed at the North-East corner of the kitchen, making it possible for the water to flow out through that corner.
Southern and Western sides are the best chosen places in a kitchen for placing items like refrigerator, grinding stone, storage racks etc.
The store room must be located between South - East and East or between South - East and South.
The cooking platform or stove should be placed in such a way that one faces East while cooking

Direction of Bed

The direction of the head while sleeping is given great importance in Vastu Shilpa Shastra. The prescriptions are as follows.
Adults should sleep with the head towards South or East
Children should sleep with their head towards East
Guests are allowed to sleep with thier head towards the West.
Sleeping with the head towards the North direction is totally prohibited as per Vastu Shilpa Shastra

Location of Study Room

Study room is best located at western side of the house.
Room between north-east and east as well as between north-east and north can also be used for studying. These locations are suitable for meditation also.
The study desk should be aligned so that you face east while studying. Facing north is also acceptable. As far as possible the table should be away from the north and east walls.
